There were fields of these flowers, but I preferred this close up. Timed for wind, which is highly present here. Above a high cliff along the Columbia River between Mosier and The Dalles, Oregon

Scarlet Gilia, Iron Mountain
On a hike up Iron Mountain, one of the best wildflower hikes in Oregon's Cascades, several Scarlet Gilia (also known as skyrockets) stuck out onto the trail. No problem.

Wet Poppy, Schreiners Iris Garden
This was an unusual scene at Schreiner's Iris garden, where they display there fantastic varieties of Irises. I always prefer the iceleandic Poppies and other more conventional flowers, especially when they're wet.

Grass, Flower Buds, and Lava Rock
Near Eagle Lake, California., a very dry lake that is danger of disappearing. I noticed this old red lava rock road with some life in the cracks. The area around Lake Almanor used to have lots of roads paved with red lava rock, and it held up pretty well.

Fairy Slipper, Sahalie Falls, Oregon
This Fairy Slipper was in the woods partway down the Trail to Carmen Reservoir. Fabulous mist from the MacKenzie River creates a great place for many wildflowers and mushrooms. Picking these flowers destroys the roots and the plant.

Emerging Larkspur, Mount Pisgah Arboretum
There is a part of the Arboretum at Mount Pisgah which I would call the Larkspur Walk. In a typical year, at a certain time in spring, multiple blooms of this pretty flower go through all the phases. Delphinium decorum.

Douglas Iris
This is a Douglas Iris from my driveway in Oakhurst, California. Even though we live in Keizer, Oregon, where we have several commercial Iris growers, i like the simpler natives better. This was taken with the fabulous Micro Nikkor 70-180mm lens, which helped with the lovely background.
